The Minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI), Augusto Heleno, was asked this Wednesday (7th) about the recognition of the result of the presidential elections held in October. The question was asked by federal deputy Elias Vaz (PSB-GO), during a public hearing of the Financial Inspection and Control Commission (CCFC) of the Chamber. The minister was summoned to provide clarifications to the commission on “attacks” on September 7 – Brazil’s Independence Day – and “the escalation of violence by the extreme right”. In the second round of elections, on October 30, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected with 50.90% of the valid votes, while President Jair Bolsonaro, who was seeking reelection, obtained 49.10%. “These other things you said there are within a context in which many do not recognize the election result, and we are waiting for a solution for some things that were pleaded. They were normally ignored by the TSE [Tribunal Superior Eleitoral]by the Supreme Court [Supremo Tribunal Federal], and we are experiencing an odd situation in Brazil, which does not deserve comment now because it is not the reason for the summons”, replied the general. Demonstrations When talking about the demonstrations on September 7, the head of the GSI assessed that they were democratic and controlled acts. “Fortunately, contrary to some pessimistic forecasts, the events of the 7th of September were very peaceful, conducted in a democratic manner, in a very controlled manner. Absolutely within the standards of a demonstration that takes place in any democratic country in the world.” The Minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI), General Augusto Heleno, during a hearing of the Financial Inspection and Control Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. – Marcelo Camargo/Agência Brasil During the hearing, the work of the military man at the head of the GSI was highly praised by government parliamentarians. The president of the TSE, Alexandre de Moraes, was one of the main targets of criticism from the group. “The Senate, across the street, should rule on impeachment requests that, perhaps, are not stepping within the four lines of the Constitution”, said deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who participated in the beginning of the hearing. Summons In November, Augusto Heleno had been invited to appear before the commission to provide clarification on alleged interference, by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), in an investigation conducted by the Federal Police involving Jair Renan Bolsonaro, son of President Jair Bolsonaro, for trafficking of influence, but, on the grounds of health problems, he did not attend. The hearing had been requested by Deputy Ivan Valente (PSOL-SP). Due to his absence that day, the board approved the appointment of the head of the GSI. Today’s hearing was the result of a request by the commission’s 1st vice-president, federal deputy Aureo Ribeiro (Solidariedade-RJ), approved by the collegiate.
