Next Saturday (17) ends the second stage of the vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease throughout the country. The declaration of vaccination by the producer, however, can be made until the 24th of December. In all, about 161 million animals should be immunized. The deadline was extended by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply after request of some states, which only now had lots of vaccine departures released. “The extension of the deadline was defined to avoid inconvenience to the producer and damage to the vaccination coverage”, explains the director of the Department of Animal Health, Geraldo Moraes. In ten states – Alagoas, Amazonas, Ceará, Maranhão, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Roraima and Rio Grande do Norte – vaccination occurs in animals up to 24 months old. In the case of 11 units of the Federation (Bahia, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe, São Paulo, Tocantins and the Federal District), which make up Block IV of the Plan Strategic of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Surveillance National Program (PE-Pnefa), vaccination is for cattle and buffaloes of all ages. In addition to vaccination, producers must prove it to the executing animal health defense agency in their state. The vaccine declaration can be delivered online or, when this is not possible, in person at the posts designated by the state veterinary service within the stipulated deadlines. Vaccines must be purchased at authorized resellers and kept between 2°C and 8°C, from purchase to the moment of use – including transport and application, already on the farm. New needles must be used to apply the 2 ml dose on the neck of each animal, preferring the coolest hours of the day, to properly contain the animals and apply the vaccine.
