The daily number of new cases of covid-19 in the city of Rio de Janeiro has shown a downward trend since the end of November, falling from a seven-day moving average of 4,483 on November 19 to 364 on December 11. The data are on the panel of the city’s Epidemiological Observatory. In January, in the wave of the Ômicron variant, the city registered more than 25,000 new cases per day, on the moving average, with a peak of 37,484 on January 10. In April, cases dropped below 100 per day, rising to around 4,000 in June, falling further below 70 cases per day in September and rising from the beginning of November. With the advancement of vaccination against covid-19, deaths did not register a very strong increase following the waves of cases in 2022, reaching 92 in the seven-day moving average in January, 21 in June and 15 last month. Admissions totaled 695 in November and today the city has 60 people hospitalized in the public network, according to the city hall panel. The demand for testing and positivity rate are also decreasing. There were 93,530 antigen tests in the week of November 13th to 19th, with a positivity of 30%, falling to 32,205 from December 4th to 10th, with a positivity of 22%. The city of Rio de Janeiro recorded 222,515 cases in 2020, 42,620 of which were serious and 18,962 died. In 2021, there were 309,162 confirmed cases of covid-19, with 43,457 serious and 16,306 deaths. So far this year, the city hall has registered 732,974 cases of covid-19, with 7,311 serious and 2,601 deaths. Vaccination The advance of vaccination against covid-19 in the city remains slow, after the wide coverage achieved by the two doses of the basic cycle of immunization against the disease, started in February 2021 with the elderly and later for the adult population. When considering the population residing in the municipality from 18 years of age, 99.9% received the first dose of the vaccine and 99.8% were protected with two doses. The proportion drops to 76.4% with the first booster dose and only 37.8% of adults returned to the posts to guarantee the second booster. For children, vaccination for the 3 and 4 year olds began on July 20 and was interrupted a few times due to lack of doses in the Municipal Health Department’s stock. Babies aged 6 months to 2 years, with comorbidities, began to be vaccinated on November 17th. So far, only 6% of the estimated audience aged 6 months to 4 years have received both doses and 9% are taking the first. Almost 300,000 babies and children in this range were not taken by parents or guardians to be immunized against covid-19. In the age group of 5 to 11 years old, which began to be served on January 17th, 63% of the target public completed the basic scheme with two doses and 21% received the first immunization. Nearly 90,000 children in this range remain vulnerable to the coronavirus, without having received a single dose of the vaccine.
