President Jair Bolsonaro participated today (13), in Brasília, in the celebration of Sailor’s Day, held at the Marine Corps Group. On the occasion, he also awarded the Mérito Tamandaré medals, one of the Navy’s highest decorations. The president of Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), Glen Valente, was one of the recipients of the commendation. Bolsonaro did not speak, but a message from him was read by the ceremonial. In it, the president said that “Brazil believes, at any time, in the indelible performance of its Armed Forces, in favor of the defense of our homeland and guaranteeing the freedom of the Brazilian people”. In another passage, he added that the country is “the cradle of a resilient and, above all, patriotic people”. Sailor’s Day is celebrated on the birthday of Admiral Joaquim Marques Lisboa, the Marquês de Tamandaré, who was born 215 years ago and is the patron saint of the Navy in Brazil. Throughout the 19th century, he had an outstanding participation in the wars of Independence, Cisplatina and Paraguay, among other military feats.
