Exhibition at Masp presents work by Cinthia Marcelle

The Museum of Art of São Paulo (Masp), located on Avenida Paulista, opens today (14) a solo show by artist Cinthia Marcelle. This will be the first panoramic dedicated to Marcelle’s work in Brazil and features 49 works, ten of which were created especially for this exhibition. Called Cinthia Marcelle: Por Via das Dúvidas, the exhibition is held in the second basement of the museum and is on display until the 26th of February. The works selected for the exhibition cover almost two decades of production by the contemporary artist and, among them, there are works that were produced in partnership with filmmaker Tiago Mata Machado and South African artist Jean Meeran. Curated by Isabella Rjeille. Cinthia Marcelle’s work studies the way objects, ideas and concepts are ordered in the world. Through installations, photographs, videos, paintings, collages and drawings, she discusses hierarchy, power structures and the order of things. Her works also show the passage of time, which reveals itself mainly through the practice of repetition and accumulation. The title of the exhibition, for example, refers to a work by the artist that consists of drawing a brick wall with a roll of masking tape and a sheet of paper. The tape and the paper are the same color, confusing figure and background. Over time, the tape ages and takes on yellowish tones, standing out against the paper. Her work is also known for the constant figures of the student and the worker. Materials from school environments or civil construction are used in some of the works, alluding to the power of social transformation. In one of them, for example, the artist uses a school chair that was used by high school students during the occupations of public schools in 2016. This chair is balanced only by a handful of chalk, reflecting on the fact that high school students challenge the order of things to change the course of Brazilian education. Cinthia Marcelle: just in case, integrates the biennial program of Masp dedicated to Brazilian stories, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil, celebrated this year.
