The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released today (28), in Rio de Janeiro, a preview of the population of municipalities based on data collected by the 2022 Demographic Census up to December 25, which shows that Brazil reached 207,750,291 million inhabitants this year. According to the preliminary result, the Southeast has 87,348,223 million inhabitants; the Northeast, 55,389,382 million; the South, 30,685,598 million; the North, 17,834,762 million, and the Midwest, 16,492,326 million. The IBGE explained that the disclosure aims to comply with the law that determines the institute to annually provide the calculation of the population of each of the 5,570 municipalities in the country to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU). Following a statistical model, the IBGE delivers a previous result for the year 2022 based on 83.9% of the census population. “This adopted model was extensively studied and approved by the Consultative Committee of the 2022 Census, which looked in detail at the process developed to provide the TCU and society with the best possible technical and real data”, said the director of Research at the IBGE, Cimar Azeredo. Statistical model The IBGE reported that it studied proposals to comply with legal obligations in relation to the disclosure of municipal populations. After analyses, the institute’s team concluded that the best model is the one that uses data from the 2022 Census in cities where collection had already ended and a combination of data collected and estimates for the other municipalities. “The IBGE’s mission is to portray reality. After discussing the proposals, we chose the one that comes as close as possible to the population reality in the country’s households”, stated the technical coordinator of the Census, Luciano Duarte. The information disclosed was delivered this Wednesday to the TCU for the purpose of calculating the distribution of the Municipalities Participation Fund (FPM), made according to the number of inhabitants. The table with the preview of the population for each municipality will be published in the Official Gazette (DOU).
