The State Civil Defense of São Paulo issued an alert for possible damage caused by rain in the municipalities of Aparecida and Socorro, inland. A further 18 cities are in a state of attention, including the capital of São Paulo and five municipalities in Greater São Paulo (Santo André, São Caetano do Sul, Caieras, Francisco Morato and Barueri). Dead and homeless Since the beginning of December, the Civil Defense has counted 18 deaths caused by the rains, 13 due to floods, three due to landslides and one due to lightning. There are still two people missing. The homeless add up to 776 people. Yesterday (15), a 46-year-old man died after a tree fell on the house where he lived in Vila Lucélia, in Santo André, in the metropolitan region. Floods and landslides During the heavy rains that hit the capital of São Paulo and part of the metropolitan region as of late afternoon yesterday, firefighters received 167 calls for falling trees, two for landslides and 28 related to floods. The city’s Emergency Management Center (CGE) identified seven flooding points in the capital, in the south and southeast zones. At least four streams overflowed during the rains: Zavuvus and Águas Espraiadas, in the south zone, Mooca and Rio Verde, in the east zone.
