Broadband internet will be activated at the Yanomami Indigenous Reserve, in Roraima, informed the Ministry of Communications (MCom) this Thursday (26). The measure aims to serve the local population and facilitate communication between the humanitarian teams that provide care in the region. Telebras will provide access to the signal through the Geostationary Defense and Strategic Communications Satellite (SGDC). The folder also informed that it is studying the installation of fixed internet points in the locality. “Today we have the possibility of immediately taking 15 internet points to that location. This is equivalent to more than double what we currently have installed in Yanomami lands. Our goal is to ensure that the population is served in the best possible way, in addition to enabling communication between doctors and humanitarian teams with the rest of the world so that the situation can be overcome as soon as possible”, said Minister Juscelino Filho, in note released by the folder. Since January 20, a federal government task force has been operating in the region in response to the humanitarian crisis faced by the indigenous people. According to the federal government, more than 30,400 indigenous people live in the area that the Union allocates for the exclusive use of the Yanomami. Motivated by accusations that the illegal activity of prospectors is contaminating the rivers that supply the local communities, destroying the forest and affecting the survival conditions of the populations, the federal government sent to the Yanomami Indigenous Land, at the beginning of last week, technicians from the Ministry of Health who found malnourished children and elderly people, many weighing less than the recommended minimum. There were also people with malaria, acute respiratory infections and other illnesses, without receiving any kind of medical assistance.
