President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a call from French President Emmanuel Macron this Thursday afternoon (26). According to the Planalto Palace, the conversation lasted more than an hour and both dealt with a series of topics, such as climate change and threats to democracy by actions of extremist groups. “Both agreed on the risks that hang over democracy due to the violent actions of extreme right-wing groups. In this context, they discussed the importance of combating disinformation”, stated the Planalto Palace, in an official note. According to the government, Lula invited Macron to visit Brazil and visit the shipyard in Itaguaí (RJ), where conventional submarines and a nuclear-powered submarine are being built, as a result of bilateral cooperation between France and Brazil. Environment In the environmental area, Lula spoke about the objectives of the Summit of the Amazon Countries, which is being organized by Brazil in the coming months. He took the opportunity to invite France, as the European country has sovereignty over French Guiana, which is part of the Amazon biome. The French leader reiterated the invitation for Brazil to participate in the One Forest Summit in March, which France and Gabon will host. When dealing with global governance issues, according to the Planalto Palace, Lula and Macron spoke about the adaptation of new international financing instruments to promote the climate transition and the fight against hunger and inequalities. “It was remembered that India and Brazil, which occupy the presidency of the G20 this year and next, will play a central role in this debate”, says the note. Another point discussed in the call was the efforts to conclude negotiations for the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. Finally, Lula and Macron spoke about the urgency of seeking peace between Russia and Ukraine. “President Lula highlighted the need for greater engagement by global leaders with this objective, within the scope of the UN and a political G20”, reported Planalto. Next Monday (30), President Lula will receive, in Brasilia, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, who is the head of government of the European country. The expectation is that the Mercosur and European Union agreement, in addition to climate change, will be among the main topics of the visit. Before coming to Brazil, Scholz must visit Argentina and Chile.
