The Corregedoria Geral de Justiça do Rio de Janeiro (CGJ-RJ) informed today (26) that, soon, more civil registry offices will be able to issue the National Driver’s License (CNH) in the state. Currently, 16 of them are qualified to perform this service, spread over seven municipalities: Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis, Niterói, Nova Iguaçu, Duque de Caxias, Maricá and Nova Friburgo. The issuance of CNH by civil registry offices in the state of Rio de Janeiro began in May last year with the aim of meeting a repressed demand due to the covid-19 pandemic. To this end, a technical cooperation agreement was signed between the Traffic Department (Detran-RJ) and the Association of Natural Persons Registrars (Arpen-RJ). Negotiations took place in 2021 and involved the CGJ-RJ, which also signed the agreement. Both the first and second copies can be obtained from accredited notary offices. They are also able to issue the document after the renewal procedures and in the event of adding a category. In a note, the CGJ-RJ informs that the civil registry offices provide the service without the need for an appointment. “The initiative expands the issuance of documentation and favors the citizen, streamlining the service”, says the text. According to Arpen-RJ, the measure complies with Federal Law 13,484/2017, which now allows the signing of agreements between civil registry offices and public bodies for the reception and delivery of identification documents to citizens. To request the service, it is necessary to pay the Single Document of the Detran de Arrecadação (Duda) and a convenience fee that may vary between different municipalities. “After the request, the deadline for delivery of the document will be up to 15 working days”, informs the entity.
