The century-old Figner mansion, located in the Flamengo neighborhood, south of the Rio de Janeiro capital, was reopened in January last year, after restoration, housing the Espaço Cultural Arte Sesc. This Saturday (28), the space celebrates one year of activities, with completely free programming for the public of all ages. The curator of Arte Sesc, Marcelo Campos, said that starting at 2 pm, as part of the Educational Programme, there will be a mediated visit to the Abstrações exhibition, composed of works by female artists who explore the path of abstraction in different times and expressive forms, including including Fayga Ostrower, Renina Katz, Anna Letycia, Anna Maria Maiolino, Ana Cláudia Almeida and Laís Amaral. The exhibition will continue on display. There will also be, from 2 pm onwards, an artistic laboratory for children, in addition to the exhibition of documentaries, such as Nós, Palhaças, which registers the female perspective on the past, present and future of the circus, at the Sessão Pipoca Picadeiro. The screening is followed by a debate with the filmmakers. At 4 pm, there will be, also within the Educational Program, a mediated visit and a laboratory for the adult audience, more connected to cinema and music. The program includes, at 5 pm, the screening of the documentary Orin – Music for the Orixás. The closing of the festivities takes place at 6 pm, with the launch of the Abstractions Exhibition Catalogue. “Anyone can participate. It is an external activity, outside the mansion”. Importance Marcelo Campos reinforced the importance of the cultural center for the Social Service of Commerce (Sesc) in Rio. “Opening a cultural space in the city is a rarity and the Flamengo neighborhood is a place that doesn’t have that much cultural space”. The exhibitions that occupy Espaço Arte Sesc are curatorial cuts around pieces from the Sesc RJ collection, composed of more than 500 works, which were spread across units in the state. With the revitalization of the space, it was possible to start cataloging, cleaning and storing these works in appropriate rooms at the Flamengo headquarters, which allowed the continuity of research around the collection. In addition to the exhibitions, Arte Sesc has different programs in other artistic languages, such as music, audiovisual, performing arts and literature. At Bistrô Artes Sesc, visitors can try a menu signed by French chef Frédéric Monier. Origin Located at Rua Marquês de Abrantes, 99, in Flamengo, Espaço Cultural Arte Sesc is one of the 26 Sesc units in Rio de Janeiro. The institution’s state headquarters is located there. The property was built in 1912 and listed by the Rio Heritage of Humanity Institute (IRPH). There lived the Czech businessman Frederico Figner (1866/1947), a pioneer of the phonographic industry in Brazil. He was the founder of Casa Edison, which resold sound and light equipment such as phonographs, gramophones and kinetoscopes, and also the creator of the first music record company in Brazil, Odeon. The space was reopened in January 2022 after a year of restoration work and seven years closed to the public. During this period, the property housed only administrative activities. The inaugural exhibition was Notícias do Brasil: Carybé, Cícero Dias and Glauco Rodrigues, with engravings signed by the three artists, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1922 Modern Art Week. New exhibition For 2023, Marcelo Campos revealed that the cultural center will change the exhibition on display. “It will remain linked to the Sesc Rio collection. We are going to have an exhibition that honors Emanoel Araújo, recently deceased, who has works in the collection”. The curator said that Afro-descendant artists will be brought in to dialogue with Araújo’s works. This exhibition will open in April and will remain on display for six months. Emanoel Araújo was a Brazilian sculptor, designer, illustrator, costume designer, engraver, set designer, painter, curator and museologist. He was born on November 15, 1940, in Santo Amaro (BA) and died on September 7, 2022, in São Paulo.
