Paralympic judo in Brazil ended Monday (30) with five medals at the Grand Prix in Almada (Portugal). The highlight was Elielton Oliveira, gold in the category up to 60 kilos of the J1 class (total blind). The podium also had the also Brazilian Roberto Paixão, who took bronze. Two other judokas from the country won bronze medals this Monday: Rosi Andrade, in the up to 48 kg category of the J1 class, and Lúcia Araújo, among the up to 57 kg athletes in the J2 class (low vision). There was also a silver obtained by Harlley Arruda in the weight up to 73 kilos of the J1 class. Elielton’s gold was his first for the Brazilian national team. The category dispute brought together five athletes, who fought each other. The champion beat all four opponents, including Roberto, who won one of his four fights and ended up third in the bracket. The all-against-all format was the same as Lúcia and Rosi faced. The first, a two-time Paralympic silver medalist, won two bouts and lost two others, taking bronze. The second faced a bracket with three judokas, but was overcome in both fights, one of them by Turkish Ecem Cavdar, world runner-up. Of the Brazilian medalists, Harlley was the only one who faced elimination disputes. He reached the final after beating Turkey’s Gokce Yavuz in the quarterfinals and Kazakhstan’s Yergali Shamey in the semifinals. In the gold decision, the judoka did not pass by the German Lennart Sass, silver in the World. Who also fought this Monday was Thiego Marques, in the up to 60 kg category of the J2 class. After losing in his debut to Alikhan Dzhumagulov, from Kyrgyzstan, he reacted in the repechage by defeating the Mexican Bryan Beltran. In the duel for bronze, however, the Brazilian could not resist the Spaniard Luis Gavilán Lorenzo. In addition to medals, the judokas are looking for points in the rankings of the International Association of Sports for the Blind (IBSA, acronym in English), which will define the classifieds for the Paralympics in Paris (France), in 2024. This year, the Brazilians will face the Grand Prix de Alexandria (Egypt), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Tokyo (Japan), in addition to the Ibsa World Games in Birmingham (Great Britain) and the Parapan Games in Santiago (Chile).
