Brazilian doctor Jarbas Barbosa took over this Tuesday (31) as director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), for a term until 2028. Barbosa succeeds Carissa F. Etienne, from Dominica, who has led the organization since 2012 Jarbas Barbosa was elected by PAHO Member States in September 2022, during the 30th Pan-American Sanitary Conference, in the United States. Before taking over as director of PAHO, Jarbas was the organization’s assistant director and led efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, especially with regard to equitable access to vaccines and regional capacities for manufacturing Jarbas Barbosa is a trained physician from the Federal University of Pernambuco and specialist in Public Health and Epidemiology from the National School of Public Health, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). He is also a Master in Medical Sciences and a Doctor in Public Health from the University of Campinas (Unicamp). He was municipal secretary of health in Olinda, state secretary of health in Pernambuco and director of the National Center for Epidemiology. He began his career at PAHO in 2007 as manager of the Health Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control area. In 2011, he returned to the Brazilian Ministry of Health as Secretary of Health Surveillance, later taking over the Secretary of Science, Technology, Innovation and Strategic Inputs. Before becoming assistant director, Jarbas was CEO of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) from 2015 to 2018. PAHO serves the Americas region and serves as the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO).
