The US government released a statement on President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s visit to the US on February 10. Lula will meet with President Joe Biden, in Washington, where they will discuss topics such as combating climate change, food security, promoting economic development, strengthening peace and security, and controlling regional migration. According to the statement, released yesterday (31), Biden wants to “further strengthen the close relationship between the United States and Brazil” and reaffirm the support of the North American country for Brazilian democracy. “During the meeting at the White House, the two presidents will discuss the United States’ unwavering support for Brazilian democracy and how the two countries can continue to work together to promote inclusion and democratic values in the region and the world, especially in preparation for the Summit to Democracy, in March 2023”, says the note. The second edition of the Democracy Summit will take place on March 29 and 30, in virtual format, co-organized by the United States, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, South Korea and Zambia. The first meeting was in December 2021, when more than 100 countries made commitments to build more resilient democracies, fight corruption and defend human rights. Coup acts After the coup acts of January 8, which resulted in the depredation of public buildings in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília, Biden also called Lula to show solidarity. On that occasion, he condemned the violent actions and attacks on democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power. The visit to the United States will be President Lula’s second international trip in this mandate. In January, he was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he met with the country’s president, Alberto Fernándes, to discuss relations between the two countries, and participated in the summit of leaders of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac ), in addition to other commitments and bilateral meetings with leaders. On the same trip, Lula went to Montevideo, Uruguay, for a meeting with President Luis Lacalle Pou on strengthening Mercosur.
