The Advocacy General of the Union (AGU) made official the creation of a specific group to act in the defense of indigenous peoples. The measure, which had already been announced by the minister of the portfolio, Jorge Messias, was published in the Official Gazette this Tuesday (7). will have the purpose of “articulating and standardizing legal strategies in advisory and judicial activity”. The AGU group will act mainly in cases related to Arguição de Descumprimento de Preceito Fundamental (ADPF) 709 – which is being processed by the STF, ordering the federal government to adopt measures to contain the pandemic in indigenous territories – and in the public civil action that is being processed in Roraima, on mining activities in the Yanomami Indigenous Land. Priorities In January, the attorney general of the Union, Jorge Messias, said that the environmental issue and actions to protect native peoples, especially indigenous peoples, are among the portfolio’s priorities. On the occasion, he announced the creation of a sector dedicated to acting specifically in this area: the National Attorney for the Defense of the Climate and the Environment, which will be headed by attorney Mariana Barbosa Cirne. “Indigenous peoples were abandoned to their fate through a clear project of omission [de serviços e cuidados que deveriam ser dirigido a eles]. We have a constitutional commitment to support indigenous peoples, and our guideline is very clear in this regard”, said the attorney general of the Union. In the evaluation of attorney Mariana Cirne, the previous administration [do governo federal] it wasn’t just silent. “It was against indigenous peoples,” she said. “We will therefore review this, taking actions that involve this agenda to reverse this logic.”
