Retail trade sales volume closed 2022 with growth of 1%, according to data from the Monthly Survey of Commerce (PMC) released today (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This was the sector’s worst result since 2016, when it had dropped by 6.2%. Among the retail segments, the activity of fuels and lubricants, with a rise of 16.6%, was the one that presented the best result. Another four activities closed the year with growth: books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (14.8%), pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (6.3%), equipment and materials for office, information technology and communication (1 .7%) and supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco (1.4%). Three activities had decrease: other articles of personal and domestic use (-8.4%), furniture and household appliances (-6.7%) and textiles, clothing and footwear (-0.5%). In December, retail trade fell by 2.6% compared to the previous month and increased by 0.4% compared to December 2021. The sector’s nominal revenue increased by 14.1% in the accumulated result for the year and 10.2% % compared to December 2021, but retreated by 0.3% from November to December. Extended retail Extended retail, which also analyzes the sectors of construction materials and vehicle and parts sales in addition to the eight retail activities, ended the year with a drop of 0.6% in sales volume, due to losses of 8.7% % in the construction sector and 1.7% in vehicles. The sector had a loss of 0.6% compared to December 2021, but increased by 0.4% from November to December. Broad retail revenue grew 12.6% in the 12-month period, 8.7% compared to December 2021 and 0.4% from November to December.
