The Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França, informed today (24th) that the mayors of municipalities on the coast of São Paulo affected by the rains should go to Brasília, in the next two weeks, to align measures to assist the population. The meeting should be chaired by the Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes. The two ministers are, this Friday, in Santos, after following a schedule of appointments in São Sebastião, yesterday (23). According to França, one of the ideas that emerged in the midst of discussions with local authorities is to take advantage of the metropolitan region administration model. For him, this would influence the way in which the command of alerts to the population about the increased risk in certain areas is dealt with. “One of the suggestions that a parliamentarian gave, correct, this region has a metropolitan format. It is one of the few regions in Brazil where there is a CNPJ of the metropolitan region. for this metropolitan command and that, eventually, the Civil Defense can supply aircraft, so that they constantly fly over the areas to avoid new undue occupations”, he said. Based on the metropolitan region model, França argues that the allocation of public funds could be reformulated. “Part of the resource, instead of coming to each city, can go straight to the metropolitan region and serve everyone from there. Even to the north coast, because only the cities on the tip of the north coast are not part of the metropolitan region. But the request is much stronger, if it comes with all the mayors agreeing”, he said, adding that the mayors have renewed requests for macro drainage of canals and housing actions. Indigenous Peoples Also in Santos’ entourage, the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, argued that recent events demonstrate the importance of carrying out occupation planning that takes climate change into account: “we are experiencing both floods and drought in Rio Grande do Sul and that makes us worry about all the disasters that have been happening”. The minister confirmed the visit to the Ribeirão Silveira Indigenous Land, which extends across the municipalities of São Sebastião, Bertioga and Salesópolis and which has been affected by the storms registered since the last 19th. donations.
