Silvio Almeida proposes alliances against problems common to UN countries

27/02/2023
in English

The Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Silvio Almeida, proposed this Monday (27) to the United Nations (UN) alliances focused on problems common to several countries, to get out of what he classified as a “historical crossroads”. He also asked for support for Brazil’s candidacy for the Human Rights Council, for the term of 2024 to 2026. “I am certain that my country and the world are at a historic crossroads. I feel that the time has come to heal the wounds, bridge chasms and build. It is with this feeling that I come to say that Brazil has returned in a new way to a new time”, said the minister in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is participating in the 52nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council. Minister of Human Rights speaks at the UN, in Geneva – Violaine Martin/UN The partnerships proposed by the minister have four main axes: the survival of the planet, dignified and decent life, the right to development and against hatred. “We are fully aware that, even working with all our capabilities, we need the world. Therefore, I propose to this council, four necessary alliances, ”he added. “The first is the alliance for survival. Yanomami leaders have warned that we are facing ‘the fall of the sky’. Let us know how to hear this call and redouble our efforts for ways of life that allow us to live in peace with our planet, ”he said. The second alliance, Almeida said, would be for a decent and dignified life: “we need not only to eradicate poverty, but also to promote dignity at work and leisure. Even those who think they are privileged today live insecure and sickened by a way of producing and distributing wealth that leaves no winners”. For the minister, the third alliance between the countries would be for the right to development. “Amefrican peoples [em referência aos povos da América e da África] and the entire global south need to reinvent the right to development, so that it can definitively penetrate the grammar of popular struggles on the periphery of capitalism”. “The fourth and final alliance is the alliance against hate. Our countries are perplexed by the rapid spread of hate speech based on racism, xenophobia, sexism and LGBTphobia. The extreme right and fascism grow and articulate through networks that know no borders. It is our mission to ensure that love, solidarity and peace also know no borders”. Silvio Almeida ended his speech by asking for support for the Brazilian candidacy for a seat on the Human Rights Council for the 2024 to 2026 term. and for all peoples”.
