The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, was elected by Time magazine, one of the most prestigious in the world, as one of the 12 women of the year in 2023. At the age of 38, she graduated in journalism from the State University of North Carolina, in the United States, and in English and Literature from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). “Her tragic family history, warm personality and deft use of social media have transformed the once reserved Franco into an unlikely leader in the black rights movement in Brazil,” says an excerpt from the profile that Time magazine published about the minister. Other women’s rights activists, such as the Mexican Véronica Cruz Sánchez, the Ukrainian Olena Shevchenko and the Iranian Masih Alinejad are also on the list.
