The State Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPRJ) and the city government of Rio de Janeiro today (2) are demolishing a three-story building in the Muzema community, in the west zone of the city. According to the MPRJ, the building was built in an environmental preservation area and did not have the necessary construction permits. Also participating in the action are civil and military police, as well as agents from Light, Rioluz and Comlurb. In April 2019, two rickety buildings collapsed in the community, resulting in the deaths of 24 people. According to information from the MPRJ’s Task Force to Combat Irregular Urban Land Occupation in Rio, created in 2021, there are links between irregular constructions in Rio’s favelas and the gangs that control these locations. In the case of Muzema, the territory is commanded by a militia. From October 2021 to August 2022, 1,300 irregular buildings were demolished in the city of Rio, according to the MPRJ Task Force.
