On International Women’s Day, celebrated this Wednesday (8), the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) will inaugurate a room for the defense of women’s rights, with psychological and legal assistance for victims of violence. The announcement was made this Tuesday (7) by deputy Renata Souza, president of the Commission for the Defense of Women’s Rights. For Renata, the numbers of feminicides in the state of Rio are alarming. “According to the Public Safety Institute [ISP], there was a 22% increase in cases in 2022 compared to the previous year. In the state of Rio, 103 women were victims of femicide last year,” said the parliamentarian. According to the deputy, it is necessary to increase the budget for public policies aimed at women in the state. “Budget means government priority for a given topic”, said Renata, while participating in a public hearing on the growing cases of femicide, at the headquarters of the Legislative branch of Rio de Janeiro, in the center of the city. The coordinator of the Network of Public Security Observatories, Silvia Ramos, said that, last year, the state of Rio recorded a 45% increase in cases of violence against women. “What we have is a portrait of a civilizing catastrophe. There is a lot of work ahead in preventing cases, in elucidating and punishing crimes,” said the researcher.
