The Federal Police arrested this Tuesday (7) a Russian couple, a 44-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, in the south zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. They had been on the run from Russia for more than three years and had entered Interpol’s Red List – a wake-up call for international police cooperation. The couple is accused of committing various business frauds, such as large-scale embezzlement, deliberate breach of contractual commitments and obligations in the business area. They face up to 10 years in prison if convicted by the Russian court. The action was coordinated by the Nucleus of International Police Cooperation of Rio de Janeiro (Interpol/PF). The preventive arrest warrants for extradition purposes were issued by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on Friday (3). The official arrest request was made by the National Central Office of Interpol in Brasilia. The foreigners will remain in the prison system of Rio de Janeiro until the moment of their definitive extradition to Russia. In addition to the arrests, about 30 electronic devices were seized at the couple’s residence, including cell phones, notebooks and tablets.
