Hip Hop is declared cultural heritage of Paraíba

Hip Hop culture and all its artistic manifestations were declared as intangible cultural heritage of Paraíba. The law has even been published in the Official Gazette of the State. Part of the art of dance, break, graffiti, rap, MC, battle of MC’s, Slam, DJ, beat box and others. According to the approved text, recognition is a way to safeguard Hip Hop practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and techniques. In addition to instruments, objects and cultural places that are associated with communities, social groups and individuals who recognize themselves as an integral part of that culture. Jefferson Araújo dos Santos, coordinator of the Hip Hop group Roça City Breakers, from the city of Lagoa de Roça, in the rural region of Paraíba, points out that the title is a first step towards greater recognition. “I hope that in 2023 and 2024 we will have good news, as now the Breakers are at the Olympics in 2024, in Paris, we will become athletes, we are no longer street dancers, but athletes. more knowledge about dance – Hip Hop – and about the knowledge of this structure”, he explained. The new legislation determines that any discriminatory, prejudiced and disrespectful action, whether of a social, racial, cultural or administrative nature, against the Hip Hop movement, will be subject to the law.
