Rio de Janeiro police authorities recorded 36,800 cases of psychological violence against women in the state of Rio de Janeiro in 2021. The data is in the Women’s Dossier 2022, which brings data on violence against women in the previous year and was released this Wednesday (8) by the Public Security Institute, the Rio de Janeiro government agency responsible for producing criminal statistics. The number referring to 2021 represents an increase of 18.15% compared to 2020 (31.1 thousand cases). This is the first time that this group of crimes exceeds physical violence, since 2014. Crimes of psychological violence include, for example, threats, illegal embarrassment, unauthorized records of sexual intimacy. Two new criminal typologies were also included in the Penal Code in 2021 and began to be registered by the Women’s Dossier: the crimes of persecution and psychological violence itself. The crime of psychological violence itself, for example, consists of causing emotional damage to the woman that harms her. There were 666 cases recorded in the state in 2021. “It is very common, when we read the records, we see examples of men who say all day long that women are no longer good for anything, that if he leaves her, no one else will. you’ll want. This undermines women’s self-respect and makes them more involved in the cycle of violence,” said ISP president Marcela Ortiz. The crime of persecution affected 604 women. Also known by the English word stalking, it consists of chasing someone incessantly and can threaten the victims’ physical and psychological integrity, in addition to invading their privacy and freedom. Women accounted for 96% of the victims of this type of crime in Rio de Janeiro in 2021. According to the Women’s Dossier, 87.1% of the persecutors were partners or former partners. About 59% of the cases occurred in the victims’ homes. “It is a form of violence in which the subject repeatedly invades the sphere of the victim’s private life, in order to restrict his freedom or attack his privacy or reputation. The result is temporary or permanent damage. [na vítima]. Those who think that this type of injury is less serious than physical injuries are mistaken, because they will very possibly accompany women for the rest of their lives”, highlighted the president of the ISP, Marcela Ortiz. Other violence The Women’s Dossier also reports that 109,200 women were victims of violence in 2021, of which almost 35,000 suffered physical violence (murders and bodily injuries). Among the cases of multiple violence, 36% involved moral violence (crimes of injury, slander and defamation) and psychological violence, 22.8% physical and psychological violence and 13.8% physical and moral violence. There was also a record of 85 cases of femicide, mostly committed by known people. According to the dossier, 80% of the murders were committed by partners or former partners of the victims. In addition, 6,255 cases of sexual violence (rape, attempted rape, sexual harassment, sexual harassment, etc.) against women were recorded, an increase of 10.8% compared to 2020. In the 4,429 cases of rape, more than two thirds of victims in 2021 were under 18 years old. Children aged up to 11 years accounted for 43.3% of cases.
