The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes authorized today (10) the testimony of former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres on the draft of the coup seized by the Federal Police (PF) at the former minister’s house. Torres’ speech was scheduled for Thursday (16), at 10 am, and will be held by videoconference in one of the battalions of the Military Police of the Federal District, where he is being held for alleged failure to contain the anti-democratic acts of January 8, as then Secretary of Public Security for the DF. The hearing will take place in the process opened by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to determine the legality of the meeting of then-president Jair Bolsonaro, in July last year, with ambassadors to question the fairness of electronic voting. The draft was included in the process at the request of the PDT, the party contesting the legality of the meeting. In the decision, Moraes said that Anderson Torres will testify as a witness and must have the right to silence and the guarantee of non-self-incrimination ensured when asked about topics that may incriminate him. Torres’ statement is one of the steps authorized by Minister Benedito Gonçalves, from the TSE, during the process regarding Bolsonaro’s meeting with the ambassadors. The minister also asked the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic to inform whether there are records from the previous government on the preparation and dissemination of the meeting by public bodies. In the decision, issued yesterday (9), Gonçalves said that the draft could be related to the verification of the legality of the meeting with ambassadors. “A controversial issue, admitted to the debate, is whether the electoral repercussions of the speech and its gravity can be evidenced by the draft of the State of Defense decree seized on 01/13/2023 by the Federal Police at the residence of Anderson Torres”, said the minister. When commenting on the case on social networks, before being arrested, Torres said that the document was leaked “out of context”.
