Yanomami offer alternative statuette to Oscar 2023 winners

Actors and actresses nominated for Oscar 2023 will receive a warning on social media about the danger of illegal gold mining on indigenous lands. The award ceremony will take place today (12) in Los Angeles, in the United States. The Cost of Gold campaign proposes the exchange of the award statuette, produced in 24 carat gold, for a wooden statue of a hero that symbolizes protection of the Yanomami ethnic group. In a video by the Urihi Associação Yanomami, the leader of the Júnior Hekurari ethnic group draws the attention of Hollywood artists to the fight against illegal mining and the environmental damage caused by the extraction of the metal, which generate mercury spills in rivers, deforestation and contamination of fish and indigenous. “One of the greatest symbols of success may soon be in your hands, the Oscar. However, its symbol of success comes at a much higher price for our people. Here, I offer a different statuette, that of our hero. Omama is the creator and warrior of the Amazon and the Yanomami people. Omama symbolizes protection. But even Omama needs allies in the fight against illegal gold and its cost to our people and our land,” says the leader.
