14/03/2023
in English

The country gained 28 municipal districts in 2022, according to data from the Brazilian Territorial Division (DTB) released this Tuesday (14) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The state that most gained districts was Minas Gerais (16), followed by Pernambuco (nine). Amazonas, Rondônia and Mato Grosso gained one district each. 12 sub-districts were also created. According to the IBGE, districts and sub-districts are administrative units internal to Brazilian municipalities. According to the IBGE, seven districts and 52 sub-districts were extinct last year. With the changes, Brazil went from 10,649 districts and 683 sub-districts in 2021 to 10,670 districts and 643 sub-districts in 2022. The number of municipalities in the country has remained the same since 2013, at 5,568. The island of Fernando de Noronha, in Pernambuco, remains the only state district in Brazil. The Brazilian Territorial Division details the country’s territorial structure, listing the Macro-regions, Federation Units, Intermediate and Immediate Geographic Regions, Meso-regions, Micro-regions and municipalities, in addition to their internal subdivisions – districts and sub-districts. The DTB, published since 1940, can be accessed on the IBGE website. Toponyms The IBGE also released this Tuesday the publication Alterations Municipais Toponymics, which brought, in this edition, only one change to the names of municipalities. Santo Antônio do Leverger, in Mato Grosso, was renamed Santo Antônio de Leverger. According to the IBGE, the origin of Leverger is the district of Santo Antônio do Rio Baixo, in 1835, which emerged from the exploration of gold in the place. In 1943, already as a municipality, it was renamed Leverger, a reference to the Baron of Melgaço, Augusto João Manoel Leverger, who was president of the then province of Mato Grosso. In 1948, the name changed to Santo Antônio do Leverger. In the publication, the IBGE registers 132 changes in the names of municipalities in Brazil that have occurred since 1938.
