An operation involving civil, military and federal police was launched this Friday (17) in Rio Grande do Norte with the aim of “dismantling a criminal organization that operated on the southern coast” of the state. One of the heads of this criminal faction is also suspected of being “one of the masterminds of the criminal attacks” registered in recent days in the region. According to the State Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (Sesed), Operation Normandy complied with 54 court orders on 22 targets, 30 of which were preventive arrests and 24 searches. More than 100 police officers participate in the actions, which have the support of a helicopter from the Integrated Air Operations Center (Ciopaer). The criminal group would be, according to investigators, involved in drug trafficking and robberies. In addition, “its main characteristic was to kill and attack public security agents,” the government of Rio Grande do Norte said in a statement. “At least 4 police officers have been targets of attacks in the last 5 years. A police officer and the wife of a police officer were killed,” he said. According to investigators, the criminal organization would move approximately R$ 150,000 per month just with trafficking and robberies. The values would be passed on to José Kemps Pereira de Araújo, 45 years old, who is better known as “Alicate”. Arrested in January, Alicate is appointed as one of the leaders of the group. On Wednesday (14), he was transferred from the State Penitentiary of Alcaçuz, in Nísia Floresta, to the Federal Prison of Mossoró, “for being identified as one of the masterminds of the criminal attacks that have been taking place in the state”.
