The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), sent, this Friday (17), a request to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the use of the Armed Forces in Rio Grande do Norte. The state has suffered from violent attacks by criminals on public buildings, businesses and vehicles. Pacheco responded to a request made by Senator Styvenson Valentim (Podemos-RN), who asks for the use of the Armed Forces based on Article 142 of the Constitution. The article provides for operations of the Guarantee of Law and Order (GLO). Authorization to activate the Armed Forces is the responsibility of the Presidency of the Republic. “I recognize the remarkable commitment of the state and national security forces at this moment, to which the Armed Forces can be added, at the discretion of the President of the Republic. The important thing is to guarantee peace in the state as quickly as possible”, says Rodrigo Pacheco in the request, according to the Senate news agency. National Force More than 100 National Force agents are in the state to reinforce public safety after the violent attacks. The dispatch of agents was authorized by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, following a request made by the state government. At least 43 people were arrested, suspected of participating in criminal attacks carried out in 14 municipalities since the beginning of the week. The crimes were orchestrated by a criminal organization that supposedly protests against the precarious conditions in prisons. Arson attacks were recorded against public buildings, commercial establishments and vehicles.
