Brazilian Carol Santiago broke a world record and won three medals (one gold and two silver) on the second day of the Paralympic Swimming World Series in Sheffield (England) this Friday (17). Right in the qualifiers of the 50 meters women’s breaststroke of the S12 class (low vision) the woman from Pernambuco completed the race in 33s60, breaking the world record that belonged, since October 2020, to the German Elena Krawzow. Then Carol Santiago completed the final in 33s99 to take the gold. Patrícia dos Santos, from Minas Gerais, in the S4 class (physical-motor impairments), took silver after finishing the distance in 59s15. The disputes in the World Series are multiclass and the awards are made according to the Technical Competition Index (ITC). In addition to the gold medal in the 50-meter breaststroke, Carol also secured two silver medals: one in the 100-meter breaststroke (1min15s94) and another in the 50-meter backstroke (32s13). This Friday, Brazil also took the podium with Gabriel Araújo, from the S2 class (severe physical-motor impairments), with a silver in the 50-meter backstroke and a bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. The seventh Brazilian medal on the day went to João Pedro Brutos, from the S14 class (intellectual disability), in the 100-metre breaststroke. The Paralympic Swimming World Series in Sheffield continues to be played until next Sunday (19).
