The Mobile Wig Bank – a customized truck with shelves for wigs, a mirror and accessibility for people with reduced mobility – circulates around the city of São Paulo carrying out a schedule of solidarity actions in celebration of International Women’s Day, March 8th. The bank offers free haircuts for those who donate hair, in addition to donating wigs and kits for children and women with cancer, who will find there a welcoming environment, where they can try on wigs until they find the ideal one. The action is by Cabelegria, an organization that has been making and distributing free wigs for nine years to children and women with cancer throughout Brazil. The founder of the entity, Mariana Robrahn, said – about the importance of the initiative for cancer patients – that “unfortunately chemotherapy makes all the hair fall out of a woman who is already fragile. The donation of the wig makes patients who do not want to go through the bald treatment feel [numa situação] better”. Social life The action improves the patients’ social life, she said. “Often, for these patients, in addition to restoring their self-esteem, we also restore their social life, as some of them stop going out because they don’t want to be seen without hair. In addition to donating a wig, the Mobile Wig Bank is an experience. In it, the patient does a beautiful make-up and can try on different wigs until she finds the one she likes best!”, said Mariana. Patient undergoing treatment, Elaine Cabral said she is happy with the wig received. “It was the best thing that happened to me, because I really wanted a hair, I’m very happy. Cabelegria brought my self-esteem back, I am very grateful for the beautiful work they do, a wonderful service, just gratitude”. Ariana Santos, who was also at Banco de Perucas Móvel, revealed that she loved the wig and especially the initiative. “It is an act of love and care for all of us women undergoing treatment. The moment in the truck was very rewarding: people donating and us there trying on the wigs. There were moments of great joy, especially on women’s day”. Since the beginning of the month, there have been seven days of action. “These days were very expressive, we had 155 haircuts for donation, 865 units of hair delivered already cut and 45 wigs donated”, detailed Mariana. The next initiative will take place on Saturday (25), from 9 am to 2 pm, at Rua São Lucas 5B – Jardim de São Lázaro, Ferraz de Vasconcelos, São Paulo. Patients who want to remove a donation wig must present a medical report, identity and Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF). Cancer patients must also present proof of chemotherapy. Registration will be completed to release the donation. Donation People who want to donate hair can go to the collection points available on the website or donate hair through the Post Office: A/C Cabelegria, Caixa Postal – 75207 – São Paulo/SP, CEP. 02415-972 – CNPJ – 20.000.573/0001-22. For donations, hair must be at least 20 centimeters. It is important that the hair is tied before the cut and that it is dry without a flat iron or brush. The organization makes 50 wigs per month and there is no queue for deliveries ordered through the website and sent by Sedex free of charge. “It takes about three hundred grams of hair (approximately five locks from different people) to make a single wig”, explains the organization. Since its creation, Cabelegria has collected thousands of yarn donations, transforming the project into a worldwide chain of good, which has already carried out more than 12,000 free deliveries to children and women.
