Women’s soccer: World Cup trophy displayed on Corcovado in Rio

29/03/2023
in English

After passing through nine countries, the women’s soccer FIFA World Cup cup tour arrived in Brazil this Wednesday (29), starting in Rio de Janeiro. The trophy was presented on Corcovado, the main tourist spot in the city, in a ceremony open to the public. The event was attended by ambassadors from Australia and New Zealand – hosts of this year’s World Cup –, the coach of the women’s national team Pia Sundhage, and references of the modality such as midfielder Formiga and former defender Aline Pellegrino, current manager of women’s competitions at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The selection’s debut will be on July 24, against Panama, in Group F, which also includes France and Jamaica. “[Temos] full conditions to bring this Cup. We know that the issue of opponents will be difficult, but it was never easy, right?”, said the 45-year-old player, who played seven out of eight editions of the Women’s World Cup. Runner-up with the Brazilian team in the World Cup in China (2007) – best campaign in history – Aline Pellegrino projects Brazil, at least, in the quarterfinals. “We are there among the top 10, a World Cup that got bigger, with 32 teams. So if we start from this principle, Brazil has everything to be fighting there among the eight teams”, pondered Pellegrino, who in June last year took over the management of competitions at the CBF. “Winning a World Cup now in July/August is very important. Having a Cup in Brazil for what we need to massify, promote, root women’s football is perhaps even the most important thing. This is a plan, a very important goal and I hope it works out”, added the director. On the 6th, Sports Minister Ana Moser confirmed Brazil’s presence in the dispute to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, during an interview with the Sem Censura program, on TV Brasil. This Tuesday (30th), the minister highlighted the interest in disseminating the sport in the country, highlighting the national strategy for women’s football, during the presentation of the portfolio’s planning in the first days of management. 📍 Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro. The trophy will be displayed in Brasília, at an event with the participation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Minister of Sports Ana Moser. After Brazil, the cup will go to Argentina (1st of April), Colombia (3rd), Costa Rica (5th), Panama (8th), United States (11th in Saint Louis and 12th and 13th in New York) , Haiti (15), Jamaica (17) and Canada (19 and 20). The cup tour, which covers the 32 countries qualified for the World Cup, began on February 25 in Japan. * Reporting in partnership with Rodrigo Ricardo, from Rádio Nacional, in Rio de Janeiro.
