Until May 3, the National Supply Company (Conab) will send around 12,700 food baskets to its storage unit in Boa Vista (RR) to the Yanomami indigenous peoples as their final destination. The baskets were purchased at R$ 5.2 million in an auction, paid with funds from the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger (MDS). According to Conab, the amount paid represents a “saving of at least R$ 1.4 million, motivated by a 21.22% discount on the opening price of the auction”. After arriving at the storage unit, the food will be sent to the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), to then be forwarded to the Yanomami. “Aiming to meet the food tradition and food security of the indigenous people, the baskets have a different composition, containing rice, powdered milk, corn flakes, sardines in oil, cassava flour, desiccated cured beef and chestnuts. Pará”, reported Conab. The company works with the expectation of acquiring, until June this year, another 76,152 baskets, in the total amount of R$ 54.9 million. By the end of the year, 143,161 food baskets are expected to be distributed. Of these, 101,536 will go to the Yanomami.
