This Wednesday (5), at 7 pm, the 2023 season of ballet at Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (TMRJ) begins with Giselle, one of the most famous shows in the world, which premiered in 1841 at the Paris Opera, France . Held by the Associação dos Amigos do Teatro Municipal, sponsored by Petrobras, Giselle’s season will have ten recitals, with a presentation closed to public schools, with the participation of the Ballet and Symphony Orchestra of the Municipal Theater, conducted by maestro Jésus Figueiredo . Classification is free and tickets can be purchased at the box office or on the theater website. Prices vary from R$ 20 (gallery) and R$ 40 (upper balcony), to R$ 60 (audience and noble balcony) and R$ 80 (boxes and cabins, individual ticket). After years presenting a production by Sir Peter Wright, the Ballet of Theatro Municipal (BTM) will show, this season, a version based on the original choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, conceived and adapted by Hélio Bejani and Jorge Texeira. The lighting is signed by Paulo Ornellas, the scenography is by Manuel Puoci and the costumes by Tânia Ag The ballet tells the story of the young peasant Giselle, who is betrayed and dies of love. She, however, returns in the form of a Willi (spirits of virgins who died before getting married and live in the forest) to take revenge on her betraying lover. The Willis make the men they meet on the road, late at night, dance to death. The ballet Giselle is one of the few still danced in a romantic tutu (a ballerina’s calf-length skirts). Theatrical scene For the TMRJ prima ballerina, Nora Esteves, teacher of the Corpo de Baile at the equipment, it is always a thrill to see Giselle again, a role that she performed countless times, with several national and foreign partners. “I adore Giselle! It is one of my favorite ballets to dance and see because the first dancer has, in Giselle, the opportunity for a very strong theatrical scene, known throughout the world, at the end of the first act, as the scene of madness. That’s when Giselle discovers that her love, who was pretending to be a peasant, was, in fact, a prince who betrayed her and was engaged to a princess”, said Nora to Agência Brasil. “It’s a wonderful scene to see when it’s done well, and to do it because it’s so theatrical. It gives rise to distinct characters, dramatically speaking. And the music is beautiful!”, she added. Nora will attend the shows on the 6th and 12th, when two of her students from the TMRJ Corps de Baile will be performing: Marcella Borges and Manuela Roçado. The Municipal Theater met Giselle on October 27, 1913, when it was presented by Diaghilev’s Russian Ballet Company and its biggest stars, Tamara Karsavina and Vaslav Nijinski. The TMRJ Corps de Ballet presented it for the first time on November 21, 1951, with choreography by Tatiana Leskova, who also assumed the title role. Special date Dramatic ballet, Giselle has two acts, each lasting 45 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission. It will be presented to the public on the 5th, 6th, 8th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th, at 7 pm; on the 9th and 16th, at 5 pm; and, on the 11th, at 2 pm, only for public school students. The artistic director of TMRJ, Eric Herrero, informed that the soloists will be, in addition to Claudia Mota, Márcia Jaqueline, Juliana Valadão, Marcella Borges, Manuela Roçado, Cícero Gomes, Filipe Moreira and Rodrigo Hermesmeyer. “It is an enormous joy to be able to offer the public a show of such high artistic and technical quality”, Herrero pointed out. Maestro Jésus Figueiredo, in turn, recalled that Giselle is the best-known work by the French composer of the romantic period of music Adolphe Charles Adam, author of dozens of operas and 14 ballets, in addition to many Christmas carols. “Adam uses very short musical forms, but always very well constructed and very interesting and beautiful”, said the maestro.
