The 2022 Street Population Census of the City of Rio de Janeiro identified 7,865 people in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. There was an increase of 8.5% compared to 2020, when 7,272 homeless people were counted. In 2022, around 80% of the target audience were people on the street, while 20% were in institutions. In the first group, 5,026 were on the street and 1,227 in scenes of drug use. Among all those surveyed, 17.4% have a fixed residence and 55% still maintain contact with their family. As for the profile, 82% are men, 84% are self-declared black or brown, 11% cannot read or write a simple note, and 64% have incomplete primary education. The average age of homeless people is 31 years old. Among the most common activities to earn income, 57.7% collected recyclable materials or garbage and 20.7% sold products as street vendors. According to the survey, 43% said they were on the streets due to family conflicts, 22% due to alcoholism and/or drug use and 13% due to unemployment or loss of income, and 83% said they had used at least one drug. The study was carried out by the Municipal Social Assistance Secretariat and the Pereira Passos Institute, in partnership with the Municipal Health Secretariat, between November 21 and 25, 2022, when 1,872 street scripts and 57 scenes of drug use were covered. . “The Street Population Census is the engine for the Municipal Social Assistance Secretariat to improve public policies and work directly to reduce vulnerable people. It is also important to think that this situation is the result of a social imbalance”, said, in a note, the Secretary of Social Assistance, Adilson Pires.
