The National Council of Justice (CNJ) will open disciplinary proceedings to investigate the conduct of judge Mário Helton Jorge, from the Court of Justice of Paraná (TJPR), who, on the last 13th, made a controversial comment during a virtual session of the court. In a video released on social networks, the judge appears talking about cases of corruption and says: “It is widespread robbery. And this in Paraná, which is a state that has a higher cultural level than the North of the country, the Northeast, etc. It is a country that does not have the political game of other states. Here in Paraná, it’s a shame.” In the decision in which he determined the opening of the process, the national justice inspector, Minister Luis Felipe Salomão, said that the speech of the judge could characterize prejudiced and xenophobic connotation. The disciplinary complaint was requested by the Advocacy -Geral da União (AGU). For AGU, Mário Helton Jorge’s speech affected the dignity of the northeastern people and the north of the country. “The judge offended the dignity of all the northeastern and northeastern Brazilian people, since he proclaimed himself in cultural superiority in relation to such citizens, which is inadmissible coming from a member of the Judiciary,” said the agency. Defense In a note, the Court of Justice of Paraná said that it does not agree with the declarations of the judge. According to the TJPR, the magistrate has already apologized for his speech. “The Court of Justice of the State of Paraná makes it public to clarify that it does not endorse comments made by Judge Mário Helton Jorge, when voting in the public session held by the Second Criminal Chamber on April 13th. The court reiterates that it does not share any statement that may be discriminatory or derogatory, as, incidentally, is typical of its tradition and history of over 131 years. In a public note, the magistrate has already acknowledged the inadequacy of his statements, presenting his necessary apologies, to which the court associates,” added the court.
