The federal government released R$ 2 billion for the cultural sector in the first three months of this year, according to minister Margareth Menezes. Unblocking enables, for example, the execution of 1,946 artistic and cultural projects through the Rouanet Law, with an investment of almost R$ 1 billion. “These are projects that were captured, approved and were stopped. This was very harmful for the sector, producers were waiting. This generates work”, said the minister to the Voz do Brasil program. Another action mentioned by the minister was the announcement of R$ 1 billion for the promotion of the audiovisual sector. Of the total, R$ 450 million will be allocated to 250 cinematographic projects in all regions of the country; R$163 million for independent Brazilian films and R$387 million for new studios, technical infrastructure and movie theaters and preservation of small exhibitors. Margareth Menezes highlighted that the measures will help in the resumption of the cultural industry, affected by the restriction measures adopted in the covid-19 pandemic and by the lack of investment by the past government. Even with the impacts of recent years, the economy of culture and creative industries in Brazil moved BRL 230.14 billion in 2020, equivalent to 3.11% of Brazil’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the period, according to a survey by the Observatório Itaú Cultural, released on the 10th of this month. The cultural industry surpassed important sectors in the national economy, such as the automotive industry, which accounted for 2.1% of the country’s wealth in 2020.
