The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro carried out this Tuesday (18) an operation to arrest the retired army sergeant, José Carlos Ferreira Junior, known as Junior Gringo, involved with the militia of São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense. Police officers from the Police Station for Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries (Draco) and the Undersecretary of Intelligence (Ssinte) carried out an investigation to verify intelligence information related to the militia member. It was located in a luxury penthouse on Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach, west of Rio, where he lived. Junior resisted the approach and fired several shots at the agents, who retaliated. He was hit and died on the spot. The criminal was one of the leaders of the gang that exploits areas in São João de Meriti, such as the sale of gas cylinders and cable TV signal. The paramilitary group also collected bribes from businesses in the region on a weekly basis. Junior was also investigated for homicides committed in the Baixada, including a military policeman.
