The Central Única das Favelas do Rio de Janeiro (Cufa Rio) is distributing more than 150,000 books to expand the collection of more than 100 community libraries in the state. This Sunday (23), World Book Day, a date created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), volumes were delivered to around 20 communities. The books were donated by a multinational online retail company. They would be discarded to make room in the store’s inventory and ended up being donated to Cufa, so that they could reach readers in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, according to the president of Cufa Rio, Wellington Galdino. Distribution began on April 1st. The forecast is to complete the delivery of books in the coming days. In addition to libraries, the books can be used in literary projects in the favelas. “In addition to the capital, books have already been sent to Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, São Gonçalo, Angra dos Reis, Paraty, Volta Redonda. The book is one of the greatest means of absorbing knowledge. It is one of the things that most awaken human reasoning and intelligence”, said Galdino, while helping to load a kombi, at the headquarters of Cufa Rio, under the Madureira viaduct, with books that would be taken to the Faz-quem-quer community. , located nearby. According to Galdino, one of the main focuses of book donations is children. “We want to encourage reading, which is something that is being lost due to the internet and various other distractions. This donation comes at a good time and it is very important for us to encourage reading in the favelas of the state”. In addition to fiction books in Portuguese, many volumes of literature in English were received, as well as technical books, such as those focused on the study of law. These works are being separated for specific audiences that can make better use of this material. Galdino also explained that Cufa Rio works permanently with the donation of books, distributing material to more than 130 registered community libraries.
