President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned and published the law that, by amending the Statute of Racial Equality, provides for the inclusion of information on the race and ethnicity of workers in the administrative records of employees in the public and private sectors. According to the federal government, the new law represents “an important step in promoting ethnic equality and combating social inequalities resulting from racism”. Published in the Official Journal of the Union this Monday (24), Law 14.553/23 also provides that the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) carry out, every five years, a survey to measure the percentage of occupancy in these segments in the public sector. With these changes, the government intends to “produce information that allows overcoming racial stigmas in Brazilian society”. In a note, the Planalto Palace adds that, by containing fields intended to identify the ethnic and racial segment of the worker, the administrative records may subsidize the implementation of public policies. During the celebrations of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the government announced the decision to allocate a minimum of 30% of commissioned positions and positions of trust in the federal administration to black people.
