Justice of RJ has already granted more than 9 thousand protective measures this year

The Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro granted 9,317 protective measures to women at risk between January and March 2023. The survey also pointed out that the number of protective measures granted from 2019, including the three months of this year, reached 115,067. The statement was made by the president of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, Judge Ricardo Rodrigues Cardozo. According to him, the numbers demonstrate that the fight against domestic violence and against women must be incessant, a priority and involve, in addition to institutions in the public sphere, the whole of society. “These are numbers that convey the daily violence of which women are victims for the simple fact of being a woman. Violence is practiced regardless of the social layer of the victim and the aggressor. In most cases, it occurs in the home and family environment. Threats are the first step that leads to femicide”, warns The judge recalled the measures within the scope of Justice, which go beyond the application of punishment to offenders by the Courts of Domestic Violence. “The Rio Court of Justice is recognized as a pioneer in improving instruments that can offer more security to threatened women, such as encouraging the Maria da Penha Application, the Maria da Penha Patrol, the Specialized Network for Assistance to Victims of Violence, and the creation on the court’s website of the Judicial Observatory of Violence, of the State Coordination of Women in Situation of Domestic and Family Violence (Coem)”. He considers the increase in gender violence a sad chapter in the history of contemporary society, explained the president of the court. Protection The granting of protective measures is based on different laws, the main ones being the Maria da Penha Law, the Child and Adolescent Statute and the Elderly Statute. The purpose is to provide protection to the victim in a vulnerable state. Its application may cause the aggressor to be away from home, a minimum distance limit, restriction of visits to dependents, suspension of carrying weapons and psychosocial monitoring of the author of the threat.
