Quinteto Villa-Lobos celebrates 60 years of creation with a special weekly program at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro (CCBB-RJ). The event starts today (24th) and runs until the 12th of June, always on Mondays. The classification is 12 years old and the activities are accessible. The founding members of the wind group were Celso Woltzenlogel (flute), Paolo Nardi (oboe), Wilfried Berk (clarinet), Carlos Gomes de Oliveira (horn) and Airton Lima Barbosa (bassoon). Over the six decades of existence, the classical music quintet has had several musicians as members and has never stopped playing and recording. “One of the oldest active chamber ensembles in the country, the Quinteto has never stopped working, recording and performing over 60 years. The members change, but the quintet remains”, says the event’s producer, Ana Luisa Lima. Ana Luisa clarifies that the quintet was created to establish a more intimate dialogue with Brazilian music: “Villa-Lobos composes classical music, but he draws on popular culture. The Quinteto was born with the aim of spreading chamber music, with roots in Brazilian music. The ensemble plays Bach, plays Mozart, but he never lost that edge”. The anniversary commemorative project will have special guests to exalt Brazilian instrumental music. Among the guests are the group Água de Moringa, Marcello Gonçalves, Henrique Cazes and Guinga. In the repertoire, songs that were part of the group’s trajectory until now, in addition to the guests’ own compositions. The concerts always take place at 7 pm. This Monday, the theme will be Brazilian Music Revisited, with the instrumental Quinteto Villa-Lobos. Next Monday, May 1st, the quintet will receive the group Água de Moringa, with the theme Os Chorões e o Choro: the First Brazilian Instrumental Music. On the 8th of May, the group receives Henrique Cazes and Marcelo Gonçalves, with the theme Villa-Lobos and His Influences. Educational module The program also foresees an educational module, with a special class (masterclass) in flute, clarinet and horn, on May 15th, at 7 pm, and a didactic concert with the Villa-Lobos Quintet on the 22nd of that month, at 3pm. Both events will take place in room 26 at CCBB-RJ. There are around 150 seats available for face-to-face concerts, 40 seats for the masterclass and 80 seats for the didactic concert. The training actions are free, after completing the registration form that is available on the website of the event producer, Caseiras Produções Culturais. Teaching institutions will be able to participate in the didactic concert and audience formation by registering their students by e-mail [email protected]. During this event, the musicians assemble and disassemble the instruments and tell stories to the school audience. Tickets for the concerts, which cost BRL 30 (full) and BRL 15 (half), can be purchased on the CCBB website or at the physical box office. Quinteto Villa-Lobos has great sociocultural and historical relevance for Brazilian instrumental music, having performed at the main classical music festivals in Brazil and abroad. Currently, the group is formed by musicians Rodrigo Herculano (oboe), Aloysio Fagerlande (bassoon), Paulo Sérgio Santos (clarinet), Philip Doyle (horn) and Rubem Schuenck (flute). During the special program celebrating the quintet’s 60th anniversary, clarinetist and artistic director Paulo Sérgio Santos will be replaced by Cristiano Alves. He injured his hand and will not appear at the CCBB-RJ.
