Two agreements signed by the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) guaranteed immediate possession to the Kalunga quilombola community of the Fonte das Águas farms (formerly Luíza de Melo Farm), with an area of 6,500 hectares, and the Vista Linda Farm (Gleba 4 ), with 2,300 hectares, both in the municipality of Cavalcante (GO). In 2014, the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra), through the AGU, filed two actions for the expropriation of farms to regularize the quilombola territory. Incra’s offer for the Fonte das Águas farm was R$ 4.3 million and, for the Vista Linda farm, R$ 1.7 million. The AGU even lodged an appeal with the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF1), maintaining that the definitive ownership of their lands should be recognized to quilombola communities, without applying legal deadlines. Before the appeal was judged, the TRF1 designated two conciliation hearings, which resulted in the conclusion of the agreements. The first agreement was broader and even defined the transfer of land to Incra, with the parties agreeing with the amounts of compensation already deposited in court. In the second agreement, it was agreed to carry out a judicial inspection, in order to define the extent and limits of the expropriated area, so that the price to be paid for the land could be fixed. “As soon as the procedures defined by law are finalized, the properties will be titled in favor of the Kalunga community”, highlighted the AGU. The Kalunga quilombola territory, legitimately recognized in the federal and state orbit, covers an area of 261.9 thousand hectares and extends through the Goiás municipalities of Cavalcante, Monte Alegre and Teresina de Goiás. Currently, it houses around 4,000 people, distributed in the locations of Engenho II, Prata, Vao do Moleque and Vao das Almas.
