Leader of the Olympic qualifying ranking for the Paris 2024 Games, judoka Daniel Cargnin is out of the Brazilian squad that will compete in the World Cup in Doha, starting on May 7. According to the Brazilian Judo Confederation (CBJ), the athlete was cut after undergoing imaging tests that identified a herniated disc. STRENGTH, DANIEL CARGNIN! 🥋🇺🇸The judoka will undergo surgery to treat a lumbar injury and is out of the 2023 Doha Judo World Cup. We are rooting for your recovery, warrior! 🙏 pic.twitter.com/YwR3AYSkLE — Time Brasil (@timebrasil) April 24, 2023 According to CBJ physician Guilherme Garofo, Cargnin had been suffering from acute back pain that did not improve after conservative treatment. The 24-year-old judoka from Rio Grande do Sul will undergo a surgical procedure with orthopedist Rafael Sugino, a spine specialist. “With the advancement of medicine, today we offer very non-aggressive techniques, such as endoscopic spinal surgery, which preserves much more back musculature and allows for a faster recovery, essential for high-performance athletes, associated with a team experienced team of physiotherapists,” explained Sugino. “We hope that, once the surgery goes well, the athlete will start an adapted training routine in the coming weeks”, he added. Cargnin won bronze in the 73-kilogram category at the last edition of the Worlds, last October, in Uzbekistan. Two months later, in Israel, he was champion in the World Masters, the second largest competition on the world judo circuit, after 10 years without Brazil’s medals in the competition. This season, the gaucho had already won silver at the Paris Grand Slam and bronze at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam, both in February. At the Tokyo Games, Cargnin won bronze, his first Olympic medal, when he was still competing in the up to 66 kg category. The technical commission of the Brazilian judo team will also disclose Cargnin’s replacement in the 73kg, category whose athletes also compete for mixed teams at the Worlds.
