President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Wednesday (26th) that the concern of some countries with China’s economic growth represents a contradiction to the principles defended by the Washington Consensus in the 1980s. of neoliberal recommendations aimed at economic development. On the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Brazilian president defended the creation of a G20 of Peace. The statement was made during a meeting with the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, at the Moncloa Palace, in Madrid, Spain, after the signing of three memorandums of understanding: on cooperation in University Higher Education; between the Ministries of Labor of the two countries; and a letter of intent in the area of science, technology and innovation. “When I see some countries concerned about the growth of China, I wonder if people are remembering the speech that was made in the 1980s, after the famous Washington Consensus, when the idea was created that the world would no longer have a problem if was globalized. Even the youngest ministers remember a speech given 43 years ago, that globalization was the way out for humanity,” said the Brazilian president. Lula added that, due to the Washington Consensus, “all American mega-companies invested, not to develop China, but to use the cheap labor that China offered at that moment. The Chinese knew how to take advantage of the investment. But when Trump was a candidate [à presidência dos EUA], began to say that it was necessary to withdraw the companies that were in China. It was too late, because China is already the world’s second economy and possibly, next year, it will be the world’s first economy, ”she added. The Brazilian president said that Chinese growth differs from that of other countries due to the fact that it occurred without the country going through a war. “This is a demonstration that only with great peace is it possible to take advantage of the money produced by the people in order to generate employment and social well-being. That’s why I’m bothered by the war going on between Russia and Ukraine. No one can have any doubt that we Brazilians condemn Russia’s territorial violation against Ukraine. The mistake happened and the war started. Now it’s no use saying who’s right and who’s wrong. Now what you need is to stop the war.” According to Lula, a “settlement of scores” is only discussed when the shooting stops. “It’s like that in this war and it’s been like that in all other wars. But we live in a very strange world, where all the permanent members of the UN Security Council [Organização das Nações Unidas] are the world’s largest gun producers and sellers. And they are the biggest war participants in the world.” “I am therefore wondering if it is not up to us, other countries that are not [membros] permanent members of the UN Security Council, make a change. Why Brazil, Spain, Japan, Germany, India, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa are not [como membros permanentes]? Who currently determines are the winners of the 2nd War, but the world has changed. We need to build a new international mechanism that does things differently. I think it’s time for us to start changing things and it’s time for us to create a G20 of Peace, which should be the UN ”, he added.
