From January to March this year, Dial 100 recorded 2,846 human rights violations against indigenous peoples, according to a survey by the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship, to which Agência Brasil had access. In total, the service received 430 reports of violations from different ethnic groups. Most of the reports – made in person – dealt with the lack of medical care, improvement in schools, lack of transport and violence against indigenous leaders related to the demarcation of traditional territories and land conflicts, according to the ombudsman of the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship , Bruno Renato Teixeira. This week, the ministry has promoted several meetings with indigenous peoples who participate in the Terra Livre Camp, in Brasília, to collect reports and complaints through active listening. According to the ombudsman, in active listening, the indigenous people asked for protection from the leaders who are at the forefront of the struggle for the regularization of areas. Leaders report feeling threatened. . “Some leaders feel threatened. We have to strengthen the protection programs carried out by the Ministry of Human Rights, together with the states”, said Bruno Teixeira. Mato Grosso do Sul Last week, negotiations began for an interministerial commission to go to Mato Grosso do Sul, due to an escalation of violence against Kaiowá Guarani leaders. Recently, a group of indigenous people was arrested after protesting against the allocation of land in the city of Dourados for the construction of a luxury condominium. The group argues that the area is indigenous territory. An interministerial commission – in partnership with the Attorney General’s Office in Mato Grosso do Sul and the Public Defender’s Office of the Union and the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office – should go to the region, in May, to actively listen and draw up a diagnosis of the situation. Some of the federal agencies involved are the Ministries of Health, Justice and Public Security, and Indigenous Peoples. Ombudsman Bruno Teixeira stated that the listening aims to identify which public policies need to be implemented in the region and propose the installation of a permanent conflict mediation chamber. “We need an environment with more tranquility to implement the necessary public policies. The faster the process of demarcating the areas, the faster the pacification will be”, he opined. According to him, there are still demands for an effective search for conflict solutions in Maranhão and Amazonas.
