Five people were rescued alive from the rubble of the Leme Building, which collapsed on the night of Thursday (27), in Olinda, metropolitan area of Recife. Three deaths were recorded. According to the Fire Department, of the five victims, two were in serious condition and three with minor injuries. There are three women between 25 and 30 years of age and two men, aged 44 and 53, respectively. The teams, with 34 professionals, continue the rescue work on site, in addition to the use of dogs trained for emergency situations. Causes The causes of the collapse are under investigation by city hall experts. Some people reported that, before the landslide, they heard a bang. The City Hall of Olinda informed, in a note, that the Leme Building was interdicted in 2000, by the Civil Defense, after a joint inspection between the state, municipality and the Federal University of Pernambuco. At the time, the demolition of the property was required by the insurance company and surveillance of the building to prevent occupation. The municipal administration cites other cases of interdicted buildings and with lawsuits in court requesting their demolition. “Today, however, there are cases in which the Justice has already determined the demolition of the property, after the action of the city hall, but the insurer refuses to comply with the court order. And this even though a daily fine is charged in case of non-compliance”, says a note from the city hall. The mayor of Olinda, Professor Lupércio, informed that the municipal bodies are mobilized to assist the victims. “We are mobilized to provide all assistance to the victims of the Leme Building, which collapsed recently, in Jardim Atlântico. All secretariats in Olinda are ready to help with whatever is needed”, said the mayor, on his Twitter profile.
