At least 3,000 homeless people were welcomed by the City of São Paulo between the 20th and 26th of April. According to the city hall, the tents set up in the República, Marechal Deodoro and Mooca neighborhoods, considered three strategic points in the city, distributed hot drinks and 14,713 blankets. The city hall’s active search and requests via central 156 resulted in the delivery of 15,478 items. The 13 vans from the Social Emergency Care Coordination (CPAS) carried out the transport of those assisted who accepted reception. During this period, when the temperature was low, 2,712 referrals were made to reception spaces, 913 of which were carried out by tents and 1,799 by social approach teams. In order to reinforce the reception capacity of the socio-assistance network during this period, the Municipal Secretariat for Social Assistance and Development (SMADS) created 765 emergency vacancies. “We welcome, we deliver hot food and blankets. We offer transport to reception centers and vaccinations. This action front of the city hall, which involves social assistance, health, human rights, SPTrans and SPTuris, gives us the measure of how a well-planned action, focused on protecting people, can achieve significant results. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we also have committed and responsible teams. This makes all the difference”, said the Secretary of Assistance and Social Development, Carlos Bezerra Júnior. The Ampara SP Program, which began on the 10th, carried out, until the 27th, 2,062 assistances to the homeless population, which resulted in 704 referrals to shelter services. Through the program, comprehensive care is provided with listening and welcoming. People who accept the reception offers are sent to vacancies hired by the municipal administration in hotels, located in the center of the city, prepared to receive in separate equipment people who are alone, people with disabilities, families, elderly people and the LGBTQIA+ population. The city hall also informed that in the next few days the decree to activate Operation Low Temperatures will be published. From then on, the guidelines for intensifying the social approaches carried out to people living on the streets and in socially vulnerable situations will be defined.
