In commemoration of Labor Day, TV Brasil shows the special Passado Presente – Resistência Sindical with interviews about the labor cause and a session of thematic films, starting this Monday (1st), at 10 pm. The track is on display from Monday to Saturday, between the 1st and 6th of May. The public broadcaster presents six national cinema classics in the programming dedicated to the subject. In each edition, journalist Armando Rollemberg receives a guest to recall movements and remarkable moments that culminated in advances in labor rights in Brazil. It also highlights the current scenario and outlines the paths to a future with more guarantees and rights. The series brings important names from the country’s political scene who acted directly in struggles and achievements for the working class. Large productions of the seventh Brazilian art associated with the issues on the agenda go on air shortly after the conversation, at 10:30 pm, to illustrate the approach to the theme. The list of works and guests is Chão de Fábrica – A História do Novo Sindicalismo and Jair Meneghelli, in the second; Arms Crossed, Stopped Machines and Djalma Bom, on Tuesday (2); The Factory Men and Jorge Bittar, on Wednesday (3); Pedestrians and Olívio Dutra, on Thursday (4); Expedito – In Search of Other Norths and Avelino Ganzer, on Friday (5); and They don’t wear black-tie and Clara Ant, on Saturday (6). The six films selected for the special session Passado Presente – Resistência Sindical can be seen on the TV Brasil Play app. The public still watches when they prefer the content of the exclusive interviews that are also available on the platform. Present Past – Union Resistance Monday (1st): Factory Floor – The History of New Unionism, with Jair Meneghelli The first interviewee is the politician and unionist Jair Meneghelli. The debut film of the track is Chão de Fábrica – A História do Novo Sindicalismo (2018), by Renato Tapajós. The unprecedented documentary lasts 90 minutes and is adapted from a homonymous television series. The production tells the story of the struggle of Brazilian workers from 1978 to the present day, focusing on the union movement, in what became known as New Unionism. The feature takes a flight over the country’s history, observing the economic policies of the different governments of the period in a critical, clear and humorous way, relating them to the trade union struggle. Tuesday (2): Arms Crossed, Machines Stopped, with Djalma Bom The second interview features trade unionist and politician Djalma Bom as a guest. The film Braços Cruzados, Máquinas Paradas (1979), by Roberto Gervitz and Sérgio Toledo, is shown following the program. The documentary accompanies the elections of the São Paulo metallurgist union. In this process, it shows the structural problems of the union movement under strong state supervision and the workers’ response in the so-called New Unionism. Wednesday (3): The Factory Men, with Jorge Bittar On the third day of the thematic session, Armando Rollemberg receives engineer and politician Jorge Bittar. Following the conversation, TV Brasil presents the film Os Homens da Fábrica (1987), a production directed by Luiz Arnaldo Campos. The work has narration by actor Nelson Xavier. The film highlights the workers of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), in Volta Redonda, in Rio de Janeiro, the most important steel plant in Brazil, which was the scene of memorable union and political struggles, including military coups, strikes and even invasions. from the army. Friday (5): Expedito – In Search of Other Norths, with Avelino Ganzer Trade unionist Avelino Ganzer is the guest of TV Brasil for the talk on the show on the date that the channel shows the film Expedito – In Search of Other Norths (2006) , a documentary signed by Aída Marques and Beto Novaes. The production addresses the life of a landless migrant, Expedito Ribeiro de Souza. The film helps to understand the process of occupation of the Brazilian Amazon during the military dictatorship and the problems of land concentration and violence in the countryside. The main character is a miner farmer, cordelist poet who undertakes a series of displacements and starts living in Rio Maria, in the south of Pará. In the film, some of Expedito’s poems are recited by singer Chico Buarque. Saturday (6): They don’t wear black-tie, with Avelino Ganzer The session Past Present – Trade Union Resistance has the presence of architect and politician Clara Ant. The film shown after the interview with the guest is the Brazilian classic Eles não Usam Black-tie, by Leon Hirszman. With a great cast, the drama is an adaptation of the homonymous play by Gianfrancesco Guarnieri. The film presents the ideological disputes in a family of workers who fight for better working conditions, in the middle of the military dictatorship. The film follows the unfolding of a strike movement in a company. A factory worker worried about his pregnant girlfriend decides to get married. In order not to lose his job, he decides to break the strike led by his father. The fact provokes a family conflict that extends to the assemblies and pickets.
