Píer Mauá will host, starting on the 5th, the first edition of the Rio Art Tattoo Festival, which will bring together more than 300 national and international tattoo artists. The event will run until the 7th, from 12 pm to midnight. For tattoo artists, work will begin at 10am daily. One of the organizers of the event, Sylvio Freitas, a professional in the sector for over 20 years, said that the Rio Art Tattoo pilot project took place ten years ago, in the same location, when 50 foreign artists were brought in. until the new coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic, when this cycle ended. Freitas and tattoo partners Helida Yama and Ganso Galvão and the Sommar agency then rethought the ideal format and structure of the event, bringing a new proposal. “The Rio Art Tattoo Festival was born,” he said. According to Sylvio Freitas, the idea of this new format is to highlight the history of tattooing, in a more artistic than business vision, in which technology is currently more recognized than the essence of tattooing, “which is an ancient art”. “With that, we were able to bring back to the scene great artists, who started tattooing in Brazil, so that young people get to know the precursors of art in the country”, he said. Freitas said that although Brazilian tattooing is highly recognized and well-regarded abroad, one cannot forget the pioneers of this art who paved the way in the country until it reached the present day. The organizers emphasize the importance of coexistence between generations and experiences. Forum A highlight of the festival is the unprecedented Forum Tattoo Convention, which will bring together anthropologists, historians, physicians, among other specialists, to address the topic of tattooing. Freitas quoted historian Toni Marques, author of the first book on this art, entitled O Brasil Tatuado; Jun Matsui, one of the most renowned Brazilian tattoo artists who told, in a film, how he arrived in the world of tattooing, after spending a long time in Japan; in addition to indigenous tattooists who are not only making indigenous graphics, but are already active in the market. To reinforce the female presence in the art of tattooing, there will be a Tattoo Delas space. Another attraction will be the Focus Tattoo Cine, a festival of short films on the theme. Students from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) film faculty will accompany the festival documenting everything that happens. On the last day of the event, there will be an exhibition of the short films produced. “There are several aspects of tattooing, from different points of view, including opinion makers, material manufacturers, resellers, importers. Everyone will be lecturing about the tattoo market as well,” he reported. There will also be an art exhibition, such as painting and sculpture; gastronomy; music. In the musical part, shows will take place throughout the day, with the Ecoando project, and DJs playing hip hop and electronic music. For the first time, the Rio Art Tattoo Festival will develop a social project at Espaço Kids, hosting on the 5th, at 2 pm, a tour of students from a public school, defined by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall. Students will be taken to learn about the tattoo market and the new profession that is evolving. “We will be ready to receive these children there and show the artistic activities in Espaço Kids”. The best tattoo artist at the festival will guarantee tickets and a stand to participate in the Barcelona Tattoo Expo, in October, in Spain. Sylvio Freitas’ idea is to put Rio Art Tattoo on the international calendar. Tickets are priced at BRL 80 (full price) and BRL 40 (half ticket), but there are promotions for family combos for BRL 90 for four tickets, whose unit price starts at BRL 22.50, taking one kilo of non-perishable food. Children up to 12 years old have free admission. Over 12 years pay half price. Tickets can be purchased on the event’s website.
